Waterhouse’s Quality Food established in 1921 by John Waterhouse who had a vision to provide the community he loved with the finest quality Fruit and Vegetables. Now 100 years later and onto the 3rd generation family, we are experts in fresh Fruit and Veg and so much more. Peter Waterhouse (proprietor) hand picks his produce from Smithfield market in Manchester daily, as he has done for 50 years. There he has cultivated strong relationships with suppliers and become renowned for his high expectations of quality which is never compromised.

Having evolved throughout the years, we are now proud to state that we are 95% single-use plastic free.  We care about our planet and encourage a plastic-free, zero-waste lifestyle. Our Fresh and Natural produce is sold by weight and units (very limited pre-packed packaging); and we house an array of refill stations dispensing Household goods, Personal Care, and Dried foods.

We are a destination for Free-From products carrying an extensive range of Chilled, Frozen and Cupboard food that caters for the lifestyles of Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten Free and Dairy free.

A history

A time-line through 100 years ....
we celebrated our BIG 100TH BIRTHDAY 1st May 2021!

Waterhouse's Quality Food Ltd (as we know it today) was established in 1921 as J. Waterhouses & Sons by John Waterhouse (Founder). The store was a corner shop, just a quarter the size it is today. This was a time when everything was sold behind the counter. We sold a small selection of Fruit, Veg, Game and Fish.

Alfred Waterhouse (second generation) took over the shop in 1935. He created all the fixtures and fittings in the shop which are still intact today. In the early 1960's brothers Peter and John (sons to Alfred) were well known to all customers as they rode their old fashioned bicycles after school to deliver customers shopping.

Peter Waterhouse (third and current generation) became proprietor in 1970 where business became 'self-select' meaning customers picked produce themselves like today and took their items to the till to pay. Some 'essential' groceries or 'emergency' groceries as they called it then were added to the offering. In 1981, Peter obtained the handbag shop next door to expand the store. In the 1980's the rise of the 4 big Supermarkets took flight and business took a challenge as price wars soared. In 1988, Peter created a Frozen food destination as the era of 'ready meals' was born; and subsequently a Grocery aisle in 1995.

In 2010 John Waterhouse (brother of Peter) acquired a Ford model A (as pictured) in a bid to replicate the first ever delivery van of Waterhouse's which was actually a model T. With this, he has been around the country presenting the van to classic car shows....so you may have seen it!

In 2018 Waterhouse's Quality Food took to Social media with Facebook and Instagram managed by Peter's two daughters. All of Peters three children Nicola, Christopher & Jennifer, worked in the shop as teenagers and continue to play a part now. It will be Peter's grandchildren's turn next!

In 2019 and presently, Peter has diversified the store to another direction in a bid to reduce waste and single use plastic. A commitment was made to be 95% free of single use plastic. How? the use of paper bags, continuing trading Fruit and Veg loose and package free, providing a large refill range of natural, dried foods, household and personal care, and an extensive Free-From range.

In 2020, the country and the World was hit with Covid19. Over-night a delivery service was born to meet the needs of customers. For the height of the pandemic, Peter offered free delivery to all those self isolating and NHS workers. The community, to which we Thank so much, showed an overwhelming spirit in volunteering to make this possible when the infrastructure wasn't there yet.

By the end of 2020, Waterhouse's Quality Food website launched with a full Online ordering service for Click & Collect and delivery across Stockport, Northwich and Cheshire East.  In what has been a challenging time for many, we are proud to have been able to support our community by expanding our in-house team and expand our local brand partnerships and offerings.

2021....Peter has envisioned yet another diversification for the store....establishing a 'Raw Cold-Pressed Juicery' called 'Prodjuice Juicery'.

WHAT'S THE AIM? To help Nature do its job in Juice form. Providing an easy, tasty way for customers to get their daily dose of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and minerals that nature has provided in RAW Fruit & Veg.

WHY COLD-PRESSED? Cold pressed juice protects and preserves the nutrients of the fruits and vegetables.

HOW? The cold press juicer presses the produce to extract the juice, no heat is involved... You get 100% of the vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and nutrients when you drink cold pressed juice!

The bright green bar is in and the equipment is ready. We are so excited to announce that we have been working with Chef Ari from the Bellagio in Las Vegas to create the Menu for Juice, Smoothies and Nut Mylks. We have really wanted to create great flavour as well as giving you the very best ingredients for the healthiest convenient lifestyle.

Now for 2022...our 3 Focuses:

1. Continue to be the experts in Fruit & Veg.

2. Expand Prodjuice Juicery online

3. Organic Fruit & Veg offering including boxes.
